SET MATERIAL PRACTICE – Eintägiger Workshop mit Renate Graziadei & Abraham Iglesias Rodriguez
Der Workshop beginnt mit einem Warm-up, in dem wir Konzepte und Aspekte verschiedener anatomisch ausgerichteter Bewegungssysteme kennenlernen. Das Warm-up bereitet Körper und Geist darauf vor, sich auf eine logische, detaillierte und präzise Art zu bewegen, ohne dabei den eigenen individuellen Ausdruck zu verlieren.
Wir arbeiten an einer effizienten Ausrichtung des Körpers als Grundlage für die Bewegung. Mit zunehmender körperlicher Intensität des Warm-ups trainieren wir verschiedene Muskelgruppen, Verbindungen und Bewegungsaktionen und arbeiten dabei mit der Schwerkraft als Partner.
Anschließend nähern wir uns einem ausgewähltem Bewegungsmaterial aus der Produktion Joyful Failure. Dabei geht es nicht darum, das Material möglichst exakt zu reproduzieren, sondern darum, einen persönlichen Zugang dazu zu entwickeln und die eigenen tänzerischen Möglichkeiten darin zu erforschen.
Vorgegebenes Bewegungsmaterial bietet dabei einen Rahmen, innerhalb dessen wir die eigene Individualität und den persönlichen Ausdruck erkunden können. Wir untersuchen, wie sich das Material durch den eigenen Körper verändert, interpretiert und zu etwas Eigenem werden kann.
Ausgehend von den individuellen Qualitäten und Besonderheiten jedes Körpers beschäftigen wir uns mit der Logik und Struktur des Materials. Durch Wiederholung, Integration und unterschiedliche Formen der Interpretation entwickeln wir einen persönlichen Umgang damit.
Wir tanzen das Material in verschiedenen Konstellationen und setzen es immer wieder in Beziehung zu uns selbst und zu den anderen. So entsteht ein gemeinsamer Lernprozess, in dem wir das Material nicht nur erlernen, sondern es immer wieder neu erfahren, hinterfragen und aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven betrachten.
Renate Graziadei, künstlerische Leiterin von laborgras, Choreografin und Tänzerin, lebt und arbeitet seit 2000 in Berlin. Geboren in Vorarlberg, Österreich, begann sie ihre Tanzausbildung in der Schweiz. Bald zog es sie nach New York, wo sie drei Jahre lebte, arbeitete und tanzte – unter anderem mit der Nina Wiener Dance Company. Nach ihrer Rückkehr nach Europa setzte sie ihre künstlerische Arbeit fort und arbeitete mit Rui Horta am S.O.A.P. Dance Theatre Frankfurt, bevor sie Mitglied der Hamburger Tanzgruppe COAX wurde. 1994 gründete sie gemeinsam mit Arthur Stäldi das Künstlerkollektiv laborgras, das seither zahlreiche Produktionen und Arbeitsreihen im Bereich künstlerischer Forschung, des Austauschs und der unabhängigen Produktion realisiert hat – häufig in enger Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Künstler:innen.
Die Vermittlung von Bewegung, Körperwissen und choreografischem Denken ist ein zentraler Bestandteil von Renate Graziadeis Arbeit. Seit 1996 unterrichtet sie regelmäßig zeitgenössische Tanztechnik, Improvisation und Komposition. Ihre Lehrtätigkeit führte sie an renommierte Institutionen wie P.A.R.T.S. in Brüssel, die Folkwang Universität der Künste in Essen und die Opéra de Paris. Darüber hinaus war sie im Rahmen internationaler Programme und Festivals in Ländern wie der Schweiz, Österreich, Belgien, Kroatien, Dänemark, Italien, Australien, Frankreich, Spanien, Kolumbien und Südkorea tätig.
Für ihre künstlerische Arbeit wurde Renate Graziadei mehrfach ausgezeichnet. In der jährlichen Kritikerumfrage der Zeitschrift ballett international/tanz aktuell wurde sie 1997 als „Promising Young Dancer“ und 2010 als „Best Dancer“ gewürdigt. Mit laborgras erhielt sie unter anderem den Kurt-Jooss-Preis in Essen (2004), den Kunstpreis Berlin (2015) sowie eine Nominierung für den Deutschen Theaterpreis DER FAUST (2015).
Abraham Iglesias Rodriguez ist ein spanischer Tänzer, der in Zürich lebt. Er schloss seine Ausbildung am Real Conservatorio Profesional de Danza Mariemma Madrid im Jahr 2017 ab. Seitdem hat er seine künstlerische Entwicklung fortgesetzt und mit verschiedenen Choreograf:innen und Kollektiven in Deutschland und der Schweiz gearbeitet. Darüber hinaus hat er seit 2023 regelmässig die Möglichkeit, seine tänzerischen Ressourcen auch im Rahmen eines Projekts der sozialen Inklusion einzusetzen. Seit 2021 arbeitet er mit laborgras.

SET MATERIAL PRACTICE – One-Day Workshop with Renate Graziadei & Abraham Iglesias Rodriguez
The workshop begins with a warm-up exploring concepts and principles from different anatomically based movement practices. It prepares the body and mind to move with clarity, detail and precision, while maintaining a sense of individual expression. We work on efficient body alignment as a foundation for movement. As the warm-up becomes more physical, we engage different muscle groups, connections and movement patterns, using gravity as a partner.
We then work with a set movement phrase from our production Joyful Failure, using the material as a starting point for exploring personal perspectives and interpretations. The aim is not to reproduce the material as accurately as possible, but to find an individual way into it and discover our own possibilities as dancers.
The set material provides a structure within which we can explore individuality and personal expression. We look at how the material changes through each dancer’s body and how it can be interpreted and transformed into something personal. Starting from the unique qualities and characteristics of each body, we explore the logic and structure of the material. Through repetition, integration and different approaches to interpretation, we develop an individual relationship to the movement.
We work with the material in different constellations, bringing it into relationship with ourselves and with others. Through this process, the material is continually revisited, questioned and experienced from different perspectives. The workshop becomes a shared space to learn, explore and discover how we can make the material our own.
Renate Graziadei, Artistic Director of laborgras, choreographer and dancer, has been based and working in Berlin since 2000. Born in Vorarlberg, Austria, she began her dance training in Switzerland. She soon moved to New York, where she lived, worked, and danced for three years, including with the Nina Wiener Dance Company. After returning to Europe, she continued her artistic work, collaborating with Rui Horta at S.O.A.P. Dance Theatre in Frankfurt before joining the Hamburg-based dance group COAX. In 1994, she co-founded the artist collective laborgras with Arthur Stäldi. Since then, the collective has created numerous works and ongoing series centered on artistic research, exchange, and independent production, often in close collaboration with other artists.
Sharing movement, embodied knowledge, and choreographic thinking has always been a central part of Renate Graziadei’s practice. Since 1996, she has regularly taught contemporary dance technique, improvisation, and composition. She has taught at renowned institutions including P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels, the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, and the Opéra de Paris. She has also worked with international festivals and programs in countries including Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Italy, Australia, France, Spain, Colombia, and South Korea.
Her artistic work has received numerous awards and distinctions. In the annual critics’ survey of ballett international/tanz aktuell, she was named “Promising Young Dancer” in 1997 and “Best Dancer” in 2010. With laborgras, she has received, among other honors, the Kurt-Jooss Prize in Essen (2004) and the Kunstpreis Berlin (2015), and was nominated for the German Theatre Prize DER FAUST in 2015.
Abraham Iglesias Rodriguez is a Spanish dancer based in Zurich. He graduated from the Real Conservatorio Profesional de Danza Mariemma in Madrid in 2017. Since then, he has continued to develop his artistic practice, working with a range of choreographers and collectives in Germany and Switzerland. Since 2023, he has also regularly had the opportunity to apply his skills and experience as a dancer in a social inclusion project. He has been working with laborgras since 2021.
